I discover the wonders of comic books and the world of entertainment it brings

While walking through a market, I recently stumbled upon an independent comic book seller. They guided me on what good comics are like and how they stand out. This article highlights the key takeaways after experiencing a comic recommended by the seller. Overall it’s a very thrilling hobby.

Welcome to TonyTriesStuff,

We here are keen on trying new hobbies to increase our repertoire of skills. Whether you’ve stumbled across this for the first time or are a regular, thanks for taking the time to look through what I have created. Read on to start your journey towards mastering skills you are passionate about.

Today we are looking at comic books and how they are a good fix when you crave action from your favourite superhero. Although I have been a big fan of comic book movies, I have never gotten into comic books. I have read some comics early in my life but never adopted them as much as reading books. Hope by the end, you can find an interest in comic books.

Comic books have such a visual style of storytelling

How I Found my interest in comics

For the past six months, I have been interested in the online video game Fortnite. It is an online battle royale with a fun gaming experience. Within the game, they have a storyline which you can choose to follow. The story is quite gripping despite being entirely optional for the gameplay experience.

One time, they had a promotional event where you would receive an in-game cosmetic item if you purchased a comic book from them. I was interested, so I picked up the comic. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the comic. Until then, my exposure to comics was limited to some Indian comics from childhood. Therefore it felt like drinking speciality coffee for the first time. I was left wanting more.

What I learned about comics from a collector

While strolling through a market one day, I found a little store selling comic books. I started a conversation with the owner and asked if they sold any Fortnite comics. This seemed to offend the seller for some reason. According to the seller, the attention to detail given by traditional comics wouldn’t be present in comics mainly sold for their redeemable skins. Selling Fortnite comics was the equivalent of expecting a speciality coffee shop to serve instant coffee.

Consider Subscribing!

I was curious. I wanted to experience what the speciality coffee equivalent for comics was like. Therefore I set myself a budget of $10. I asked the seller to recommend a few options. Many of the recommendations were over my budget. Finally, I settled on Batman Year One. This comic was quite dark but had a reputed illustrator and writer. It was also the inspiration for Batman movies that came after the comic’s release.

My key takeaways from my interaction with the collector were that:

  1. Comics can be so much more visually beautiful with well-detailed scenes
  2. Stories for comics can be gripping
  3. Collecting comics can be fun.

My experience with the comic

I read the comic I purchased every night before bed. It was a very gripping story of Batman arriving at Gotham City around the same time as Gordon. The story and the environment design were top-notch. It felt pretty gripping, and I didn’t feel like putting it down.

I don’t think I can compare it against the Fortnite comic that I picked up earlier, as the Fortnite comic was book one out of five, meaning that I had only read one portion of the story. Whereas the batman comic was a graphic novel, meaning all relevant comics were contained within one book.

Looking forward

I have since picked up Miles Morales: Shockwaves which I purchased from Amazon as an ebook. Personally, I prefer ebooks over physical books for convenience. And so I really enjoyed reading this. Unlike the previous comic I had read, this one had a much lighter story and a futuristic art style, much like Into The Spider-Verse. I seemed to prefer comics like this. The second part of the story will release on October 13th, and I look forward to reading that as well.

“I used to be embarrassed because I was just a comic book writer while other people were building bridges or going on to medical careers. And then, I began to realize: entertainment is one of the most important things in people’s lives. Without it, they might go off the deep end. I feel that if you’re able to entertain, you’re doing a good thing.”
-Stan Lee
